When the Gaslighting Stops

Things will get very ugly and it's all Trump's fault.

Near the end of the movie “Gaslight,” after Ingrid Bergman discovers that Charles Boyer has been driving her insane so that he could steal their house, the following scene occurs:

Boyer is being hauled off to face trial and execution by hanging for murder.

I link to this because I think MAGA world needs a warning of what happens when someone who has been lied to so much and so long finally learns the truth. We liberals have been told since forever that we’re wrong or mistaken or crazy, and if we’re feminists we’ve been told we’re crazy and ugly twice as much. We’ve been saying that Trump was a Nazi and his thugs were going to kill people, and now, look! That’s exactly what they’re doing in Minneapolis! Being white and male and straight and cisgender and educated and working for the goddamn Veteran’s Administration hospital as an ICU nurse isn’t enough. Trump’s thugs will still shoot you in the back 5 times from disagreeing with them. Alex Pretti was as close to a saint as American life permits and that wasn’t enough for the MAGAts. He had to die as gruesomely and as publicly as that bunch of oxygen-wasters could make it.

We’ve been telling you what these monsters were at least since Reagan. We tried to be reasonable. We asked you to listen when Reagan paid for mercenaries to kill nuns in El Salvador. We asked you to listen when Newt Gingrich lied about Clinton. We really tried to get you to listen when Bush II started a war with Iraq based on complete fabrications.

You, MAGAts, didn’t listen. You mocked our concerns about Trump’s open desire to be a dictator. You mocked us when we said he was a bigot who wanted to eliminate women and dark-skinned people from public life entirely. You mocked us when we pointed out that the dishonestly-named ‘pro-life’ movement was really about denying women the ability to exist in public.

Now, one white woman and one white man are dead for no good reason whatsoever, and trust me when I say people are PISSED. This is not going away. You didn’t listen. You kept gaslighting us and mocking us and telling us in the most insulting way possible to just ‘live our lives.’

We know why the gaslight flickered. We’ve found our key. We know we’re not crazy.

And we remember how you lied to us.
